Deployable Helical Antenna Achieves TRL9 in LEO Orbit

Flexitech Aerospace’s deployable wideband helical antenna has been successfully deployed in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). This helical antenna stows in under 2 inches height making it attractive for small satellite applications. Both the helical antenna and deployment mechanism were designed and manufactured by Flexitech Aerospace in Orlando, FL. The deployed antenna provides circular polarization, high gain and a large fractional bandwidth. The antenna was successfully deployed on command from the ground. Now proven, this core technology can be applied to other potential requirements.

Kevin Jackson, CTO at Flexitech Aerospace said “we developed this antenna technology to meet our customer’s challenging communications requirement. The deployment of this antenna in orbit has demonstrated its capability in the demanding LEO operational environment. The small stowed size, low mass and wideband RF capability when deployed, has many applications on small satellites, where a compact launch configuration and very capable antenna, when deployed, is required”.
